State Rental Car Surcharge

New Jersey state imposes a $5 a day surcharge on rental car, but a new bill has been introduced that would exempt car-sharing businesses like Zipcar and Hertz Connect from this surcharge.

The legislation defines a car-sharing organization as an organization the runs a membership program intended to offer an alternative to car ownership, under which people that become members are permitted to use vehicles from a fleet on an hourly basis. The purpose of the bill is to ensure that alternatives to car ownership receive different tax treatment from car-rental commercial transactions. The state's Commerce and Economic Development committee green-lighted the bill as a way of promoting car-sharing programs. The social and environmental benefits of these programs can include reduced congestion, parking hassles and pollution, and they have proven to be a success so far in cities like Hoboken where a new public/private car-sharing initiative is gaining popularity.

Rental Car Market in Ireland

Supplying the car hire market in Ireland helps distributors and dealers to meet quotas for new car sales on certain models or to make up ground on competitors. It is also a way for local distributors, especially those run by the manufacturer, to meet top line sales targets.

In order to get a true picture of the retail Irish car market, it is necessary to strip away the rental figures because they account for between 10 to 13% of total car sales each month. When the rental figures are stripped away, the top 10 models sold are quite different. VW's Golf is no longer the number one seller, and Toyota's Avensis becomes the new leader. The Ford Focus also drops to fourth, with the Toyota Corolla rising to third place. Nissan cars dominate the rental car segment in Ireland, with the largest amount of rental units on the market so far this year. They are followed by VW, Renault, Opel and Ford.

Rental Car Insurance Ripoff

A woman in St. Louis, Missouri is claiming that the car insurance provided by a local car rental company is a ripoff. Shunta Johnson had to pay out of pocket after an uninsured driver hit her Lexus, yet the driver said that he had purchased insurance through his rental agreement with Aboard Rent A Car.

Johnson's insurance company later told her that Aboard Rent A Car had no insurance, so she had to pay a $500 deductible to cover repair costs. When a reporter for a local news channel went to Aboard Rent A Car to ask why they allowed one of their cars to be driven around the streets of St. Louis without insurance, a worker slammed the door in the face of the reporter and started yelling before he had a chance to ask any questions.
